About Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime”
Scott Joplin was born in Texas in the late 1860s and became the leading composer of classic ragtime. He trained as a pianist, performed and taught music, and lived in places including Sedalia, St. Louis, and New York.
Although he is best known for piano rags such as Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer, and Pineapple Rag, Joplin also wrote larger works, including the opera Treemonisha.
His music fell out of the mainstream after his death in 1917 but enjoyed a major revival in the 1970s. The use of his music in the 1973 film The Sting introduced The Entertainer to a new international audience.
